One of the keys to success for a propane fleet is making sure that everyone who will drive, refuel or service the vehicles is familiar with propane. The Alternative Fuels and Research Division (AFRED) of the Railroad Commission of Texas offers three kinds of free training under the DOE grant. Check them out below:
1. Drivers and refuelers. Commission propane experts will train participating fleets’ drivers and dispenser operators to fuel propane vehicles properly. These are short courses (one to two hours, depending on class size) that give each trainee hands-on experience operating a propane dispenser and fueling a propane vehicle.
2. Technicians. AFRED’s lead automotive instructor, Franz Hofmann, is nationally recognized as an expert on propane vehicles and advanced fuel systems. At partner fleets’ request, Franz will organize classes for their technicians on maintaining, troubleshooting and repairing any type of propane vehicle.
3. Emergency responders. Railroad Commission experts will also provide classes for fleet partners’ local fire officials, firefighters and EMS crews, to familiarize them with propane’s characteristics and equipment and help them respond properly to a propane-related emergency.
